We’ve assembled an exceptional global partnership to design and develop NMiTE (Hereford’s new university), seeking out best practice from around the world in order to redefine engineering education here in Herefordshire.

As the first new British university in over 40 years, we’ve a one-off chance to do things differently; to make a difference by delivering real world experience to students and employment ready world-class talent to industry.

Our goal is to operate unfettered by financial allegiances. We’re raising money for design, development and delivery through a not-for-profit charity, and we will be one of only a handful of independent UK universities. Once established, we’ll stand on our own two feet, allowing us independence to make good educational business decisions.

Engineering companies have been clear with us about the need for passionate, prepared and engaged talent; engineers who are custom educated to be able to add value in specific sectors; to help solve global problems – everyday to global – and capture opportunities – their own company’s and those we need to make the world a better, safer place. The Government have pledged us their support, so my message to these companies is clear: Seize the day!

It will take around £50 million to launch NMiTE – funding us from start up to our break-even point three years later, by which time we’ll have around 800 students, with tuition fees providing ongoing operational and development resources. We’ve asked Government’s help for two fifths of the start-up funds and they have pledged this for delivery beginning in November, mainly to help establish the first university premises. To fund curriculum development, the hiring of faculty staff and initial scholarships, we’re seeking another two fifths from industry, and borrowing the rest.
